Short answer: Use 3x3 inch (7.5 cm) paper for most paper crane projects, especially weddings and senbazuru. It folds quickly, makes cranes that are easy to see and string, and is the most popular size. Choose 6x6 inch (15 cm) paper if you are learning or want large statement cranes, and 1.5 inch paper for tiny cranes in jars, frames and delicate garlands.

How big is a crane folded from each paper size?
A finished crane is smaller than the square you start with. As a rough guide, the wingspan comes out at around two thirds to three quarters of the paper's side, depending on how you fold and shape the wings.
- 1.5 inch (3.8 cm) paper: a tiny crane about 1 inch across
- 3 inch (7.5 cm) paper: a crane about 2 inches across
- 6 inch (15 cm) paper: a crane about 4 to 4.5 inches across
Which paper size is easiest to fold?
Bigger paper is easier. The 6 inch square is the size most tutorials use because every crease is easy to see and line up, so it is the best choice for beginners and kids. Once you know the steps, 3 inch paper is quick and comfortable. 1.5 inch paper needs patience, good light and steady fingers, and some folders use tweezers for the final steps.
What is each size best for?
1.5 inch paper cranes
- Glass jars and vases filled with tiny cranes
- Framed keepsakes and shadow boxes
- Delicate garlands and table runners
- Cake and dessert table details
3 inch paper cranes
- Wedding backdrops and ceremony strands
- Senbazuru, the traditional set of 1,000 cranes
- Mobiles, garlands and ceiling installations
- Get-well and memorial gifts
6 inch paper cranes
- Learning to fold and teaching kids
- Statement pieces and accent strands
- Large arches and window displays
- Centerpieces where each crane stands out
How many sheets do you need?
One square makes one crane, so plan one sheet per crane plus about 10% extra for practice and torn folds. For a set of 1,000 cranes, that means roughly 1,100 sheets. If you are making a backdrop, our guide on how many cranes you need for a wedding backdrop walks through the math.
Does paper thickness matter?
Yes. Thin, crisp paper holds sharp creases and folds neatly at small sizes, which matters most for 1.5 inch cranes. Thicker or foil papers look beautiful but can be harder to fold small. Double-sided paper gives the crane the same color on every surface.
